Top 10 Android Games of August 2013

Looking for some new games to play on your Android device? Here's our Top 10 Android games of August. Hopefully you will discover some free games that you've missed or haven't played before

1. Angry Birds

The original Angry Birds is a one of the most successful games ever. Rovio is now attracting a new frontier in a competitive arena. “Angry Birds Friends” lets you tap into your network of Facebook friends to offer a new dimension to its familiar game. You can play weekly tournaments with friends and there are three levels per week. Download Angry Birds Friends from the Google Play Store here.

2. Final Fantasy IV

Just like Final Fantast III before it, FFIV is getting a fancy re-release on Android. This isn't the old pixelated version you may remember from the SNES days, it's the Nintendo DS 3D remake, complete with a revamped battle system, new graphics (decent for Android) and a new touch interface. It's super expensive, but those jaw-dropping pre-rendered cinematics that Square likes to shove into its RPGs might just be worth it.

3. Quadropus Rampage

If an octopus had four tentacles instead of eight, it would be called a quadropus. If that creature got seriously pissed off and decided to kill everything in a leveled, roguelike brawler, you'd have Quadropus Rampage. This twin-stick isometric fighter lets you assign different weapons and abilities to each of the hero's four limbs, getting through as many waves and bosses as you can before your inevitable defeat. The game is free, with the usual IAP upsell.

4. The Forest of Doom

Combining Tin Man Games' signature Choose Your Own Adventure/tabletop roleplaying games with a Dungeons & Dragons-style storyline seems like such an obvious move, it's amazing that they haven't done it already. Like most of the game-books that came before it, The Forest of Doom is expensive, but well worth it for fans of these unique niche. Unfortunately, the digital die in the game still have a pedestrian six sides.

5. City of Secrets 2 Episode 1

Android has become a virtual mecca for point-and-click adventure games, and the original City Of Secrets was well-received. The sequel has you once again playing as Moles the Mole, in a fully-voiced anthropomorphic adventure. The hand-drawn backgrounds are gorgeous, in the best tradition of the genre, and the humor on display in the Play Store listing makes it an attractive option for anyone looking to kill a bit of time with a fun story.

6. Quell Memento

Quell Memento is an impressive sequel to the original Quell, which throws in quite a bit of story for good measure. Your job is to help an old man hold onto his memories by playing through various puzzles themed on the items in his dilapidated house. Gameplay is amazingly varied - the amount of different elements thrown into what is essentially a sliding block puzzle are mind-boggling. Quell Memento is a $2 purchase, exclusive to the Amazon Appstore until June 29th.

7. The Rolling Dead

Sphero is that unique ball toy-controller you may have seen rolling around various trade show floors. The latest game to take advantage of it throws in the oh-so-popular zombie element (why does it always have to be zombies?) for some augmented-reality fun. You'll have to have a Sphero to play this top-down, dual-stick/ball shooter. It's a good thing that it's free.

8. UNO™ & Friends

UNO is... well, it's UNO. If you haven't played it by now, odds are pretty good that you don't care. But if you do, Gameloft has a digital version that's pretty faithful to the original, and features all the social networking-based gameplay you could possibly want... so long as you only want it on Facebook. The game is free to play, but you can spend a little real-world cash on themed decks and tables if they strike your fancy.

9. Ticket to Ride

Ticket To Ride is a successful train-based board game, which has made a small splash on iOS. It took them more than a year to bring this title over to Android, which is a bit of an insult, but those who love the original game will be willing to forgive the creators this slight. You can play against the computer to get the longest continuous train route, or play against up to four human opponents instead. The game is surprisingly expensive at $7.

10. Ku: Shroud of the Morrigan

8-bit style is all well and good, but Android devices are powerhouses - let's see some great graphics, even in 2D! Ku takes the old Zelda style and infuses it with some breathtaking character and environmental design, all based on Celtic mythology with a healthy dose of steampunk. There's an overarching story that you might find interesting, and the interface is decidedly mobile-friendly as well.
